WireFlow’s CEO, Johan Sandquist, held a keynote on one of our battery cycle test-rigs using National Instruments’ Compact-RIO platform and our own WF 3169 – Battery Stack Monitoring C Series module. The keynote was recorded during NI Automotive Forum 2019 in Göteborg, and held again at NIDays Europe 2019 in Munich.

Cell Characterization

WireFlow’s solution for cell characterization is a highly modular and scalable Cell Tester which is designed as a framework that makes it easy to integrate it with instrumentation and software from multiple suppliers.

The Cell Tester is used for long-term testing of individual cells by executing customized charging and discharging sequences while taking measurements of voltage, current and temperature. It can also be combined with more advanced measurements like Hybrid Pulse Power, Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy etc.

Rapid BMS prototyping

Use the NI LabVIEW development system with compactRIO hardware to quickly design and develop a working Battery Management System, BMS.

By using the WireFlow battery stack monitoring modules you connect the compactRIO directly to the cells in the battery stack to monitor the voltage of each cell and control the discharge function for each cell to create cell balancing. There also exist many other modules for temperature sensors, current measurement, CAN communication etc. This is the perfect platform for developing a BMS for low volume applications, or for experimental setups.

Pack verification

A battery pack consists of many battery cells configured for the desired voltage and capacity. The pack also includes a Battery management system, BMS. The design of these battery packs needs to be verified. Both the long-term capacity of the pack and the software functionality. The design engineers typically wants do many types of “what if tests”.

WireFlow design and manufacture these types of Pack verification rigs which are used for long time charge and discharge testing as well as many types of “what if testing”. WireFlow adapts the test rig to the voltage levels, capacity, CAN communication etc used by your battery pack.

Production Testing and Charging

Each manufactured battery pack needs to be programmed, configured, charged and tested before being shipped.

 WireFlow’s systems for production testing are robust and user friendly. They are built for the factory floor. The system shares information with the factory IT systems to make sure each battery is programmed and configured with the correct data. The batteries are charged to the specified SOC used for batteries at delivery and a basic function testing is performed.

Reuse and Recycling

The industry is working hard to ensure that batteries can be refurbished, remanufactured, repurposed or recycled at the end of their life.

The WireFlow Bifrost systems for Reuse and Recycling are specifically designed to qualify and prepare the battery modules and packs for any of the stages above.

The system can execute tasks such as; State of Health for characterization and remaining life estimations, TotalDischarge™ for recycling, Individual cell balancing, Charging and discharging for maintenance or transportation etc.
